Dr Suppiah is a New Zealand and British trained rheumatologist with expertise in all areas of rheumatology. He grew up in the Waikato, went to Hamilton Boy's High school and then medical school in Auckland. He is an experienced rheumatologist who routinely treats and provides the best available care to people with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, pseudogout, osteoarthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, SLE, scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome, complex connective tissue disorders, Takayasu's arteritis, giant cell arteritis and all other forms of systemic vasculitis.
He has a subspecialty interest in musculoskeletal and sport medicine and has previously worked at OxSport in the United Kingdom. He specialises in discriminating inflammatory disease from injury and is uniquely skilled to treat both.
Dr Suppiah is trained and skilled in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic purposes, determining disease activity in inflammatory arthritis and for ultrasound guided joint and soft tissue injections. Ultrasound is used as part of routine care.
Dr Suppiah has an academic interest in systemic vasculitis and has published research papers, book chapters and a completed a doctoral thesis in this area. In 2016 and 2017 he was an an invited speaker at major international rheumatology conferences in the USA.
He is actively involved in investigator led and industry sponsored clinical trials in vasculitis and inflammatory arthritis.
Dr Suppiah enjoys teaching and is involved with general practioner upskilling, undergraduate medical school teaching, and co-ordinates the academic and professional development of the rheumatology specialist trainees in the Auckland region.
